#2 Dimbola Museum & Galleries, Freshwater Bay
Once the home of renowned Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, Dimbola is now a museum dedicated to her pioneering work. Cameron was a trailblazer in her time, creating portraits that were ahead of their era. The galleries feature a permanent collection of her work, as well as rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and photography. Beyond the art, the house itself is fascinating, with rooms preserved as they were when Cameron lived there. Nestled in beautiful Freshwater Bay, the gallery also offers sweeping views of the coast – perfect for a peaceful afternoon out. #4 Glory Art Glass, Sandown
For those wanting to see some truly beautiful hand-blown pieces and get stuck right into the creative process, Glory Art Glass Gallery is the place for you. The independent glassblowing studio has been crafting unique pieces for its collection for over 20 years now, with hand-sculpted pieces taking heavy inspiration from the Island’s natural surroundings, many of which are available for purchase. Alongside free glassblowing demonstrations, visitors can also book themselves in for lessons, where you’ll be walked through the intricate processes involved by expert craftsmen. You’ll even end up with your very own colourful paperweight memento by the end of the session.
#5 Re:Box, Ryde
The smallest of the bunch (by a considerable margin), Re:Box is essentially a classic decommissioned red phone box on Lindt Street (bought for a grand total of £1 by Ryde Town Council), that’s been repurposed into a tiny gallery with rotating installations put together by numerous local artists and organisations. A series of lights from the inside create a magical impression on glowing, stained glass, and allows visitors to enjoy the exhibition at night.
Local creative Adam Brown is behind the latest exhibition and has filled the Island’s smallest gallery with caricatures of well-known celebrities, all of whom have a direct connection with the Isle of Wight. Be sure to go and check it out!
