Weather on the Isle of Wight
The weather on the Isle of Wight is one of the Island’s greatest draws for visitors. With picturesque views boasting endless miles of golden coastline, rolling countryside and amazing wildlife, the Isle of Wight is a UK staycation hotspot. On Sunny days, head to one of the Island’s many beaches for sunbathing, sea, sand and of course, ice cream!
The Isle of Wight really does have its own weather, and in fact, Ventnor is famous for even having its very own microclimate, being south-facing and protected in the lee of the high downland that surrounds the town. The Island enjoys an average of over 37 hours of sunshine a week compared to the national average of 29.7 hours. No wonder Islanders are always happy!
Sunniest destination in England
Being the sunniest destination in England has been celebrated by visitors for many years. Back in the 1930s, the Isle of Wight was known as ‘England’s Garden Isle of Sunshine’. This truism has been used to help promote the Island ever since and not just during the summer months. ‘Head South for Winter Sunshine’ was also used regularly to encourage visitors to visit the Isle of Wight at less busy times of the year. In January, according to The Met Office, the Island will have more than 16 hours more sunshine hours per month than the West Midlands.
Although you can’t guarantee the weather in the UK, you can at least be assured that you will enjoy warmer temperatures and more sunshine on average on the Isle of Wight than elsewhere in England. That’s why the Isle of Wight ripens the best tomatoes in the UK and why we enjoy unusual creatures such as the Ventnor Wall Lizard, that simply couldn’t survive a harsher climate.
