Located between Sandown and Newport in the southeast of the Isle of Wight, you’ll find Arreton and Newchurch. These historic villages feature churches built in the 11th and 12th centuries, with one being the inspiration for the name ‘Newchurch’.
In the 18th century, Arreton and Newchurch were two of the largest parishes on the Isle of Wight. The Arreton Valley runs through the rural centre of the Island and has been a centre for agriculture for hundreds of years. Whereas, Newchurch parish stretched from the north to the south of the Island.
A brief history of Arreton and Newchurch
Located in the heart of the Island, Arreton boasts a rich history stretching back over a thousand years. The manor of Arreton, dating back to at least 872 AD, was bequeathed by King Alfred the Great. It was later owned by William the Conqueror and subsequently granted to Quarr Abbey. Today, the manor is a private residence offering accommodation for guests.
Newchurch gets its name from the “new church” built there in 1087 by Norman monks. Historically, the parish of Newchurch was one of the largest, encompassing areas that later became the towns of Ryde and Ventnor.
Nowadays, Arreton is known for its historic buildings, beautiful countryside and a welcoming atmosphere that offers a glimpse into the past. Newchurch is a peaceful and largely unspoiled village, though it’s easy to forget its historical importance as the centre of a vast parish.

The food hall showcases some of the Island’s best local, regional and international produce. In the butchery, the team of master butchers will guide you through a vast selection of locally sourced meats. Alternatively, you can enjoy coffee, cake, breakfast or lunch at the lakeside kitchen.
Home to the Island’s largest collection of exotic animals, including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, insects, fauna and flora. Amazon World is a multi-award-winning zoo, offering you more than just animals. It includes a large Jurassic playground, museum, dino dig and the Island’s largest indoor soft play area.

Nestled below the Arreton Down Nature Reserve, Arreton Manor is a historical Grade II* Listed private residence. Steeped in history, the manor is known to have been owned by 8 British monarchs, including Alfred the Great, Edward the Confessor, William the Conqueror, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Charles I. Although a private home, some rooms have been made available for a more unusual escape.
Situated on the outskirts of Newchurch, in the beautiful Arreton Valley, Southland Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is a great choice for camping. The pitches are flat, level, and well-drained, with trees and shrubs spread across the site, giving it a nice sense of privacy. There’s also a large playground and various play areas. It’s easy to reach all parts of the Isle of Wight and is only a short drive from some stunning beaches. Southland is currently the only Caravan and Motorhome Club campsite on the Island.

Food & Drink
Arreton and Newchurch are home to plenty of eateries, from traditional pubs, countryside cafés, craft brewery bars and everything in between.
The Dairyman’s Daughter is a bustling freehouse pub nestled at the centre of Arreton Barns. A traditional pub serving home-cooked food from an extensive menu, using local produce and ingredients where possible. Enjoy a wide selection of fine wines and real ales, including some local brews.
Goddards Brewery is the oldest brewery on the Isle of Wight and one of the first independent craft beer producers in the UK. In 2023, the brewery relocated to a bespoke-built brewing centre near Arreton. This new site features a restaurant, Goddards Bar & Kitchen, along with a state-of-the-art visitor attraction and shop.
One of the Island’s oldest and most traditional pubs, The Pointer Inn is set in the beautiful village of Newchurch. Serving quality food and drink in the picturesque woodland backdrop, which can be enjoyed inside or out in the large beer garden or heated veranda with beautiful downland views.
Located along the Newport to Sandown cyclepath, Pedallers Café is a popular choice for cyclists, walkers, and dog owners. The café offers plenty of cycle parking and a free cycle repair station for maintenance. It’s also dog-friendly, featuring lots of seating. Savour delicious breakfasts paired with great quality tea and coffee, along with homemade cakes and pastries. You can also find filled baguettes, hot Paninis, homemade specials, New Forest ice cream and the café is fully licenced.

Events in Arreton and Newchurch
Arreton and Newchurch host a range of events all year round, including food festivals, Burns nights, open gardens, and Christmas fayres.
Since 1983, the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival has been held on the third weekend of August at The Fighting Cocks Crossroads, located just outside Newchurch. This event welcomes star chefs, musicians, local charities, businesses and more from all over. It’s a true celebration of wonderful local produce. Try out delicious garlicky treats and find culinary inspiration in the Theatre Kitchen.
All year round, Arreton Barns hosts events for all ages. Some of the highlights are The Easter Bunny Trail, Arreton Barks Dog Show, Spooktacular Halloween Pumpkin Hunt and Christmas Fayre. Plus, you’ll find car shows, plant sales, auctions and much more happening throughout the year. There’s truly something for everyone.
The Dairyman’s Daughter is the place to be for a Scottish-themed event, particularly in the winter season. Bring in the New Year with a night filled with delicious food, drink and live music at their New Year’s Eve event. Or, enjoy a dram of whisky alongside a traditional haggis with neeps and tatties, all while dressed in your tartan or Scottish-themed attire at their Alternative Burns Night.
Each summer, various gardens in Arreton welcome the public during Arreton Open Gardens. These gardens have included The Old Vicarage, Bradings in Carpenters Yard, Spreets Rew and Haseley Manor. This event aims to raise money for local charities while giving visitors a chance to enjoy these stunning natural spaces.
Harvey Browns host a variety of events throughout the year, and one of the highlights is their Sunset Socials. Held on various evenings during the summer, gather your friends and family for an evening by the lake at Harvey Browns. It’s a great night packed with music, food, and drinks. You’ll find different food vendors, special menu items and live music from local bands and artists.
