Sandown Beach is the quintessential British seaside town. With its gently sloping, sandy beaches which are lined with deckchairs, fun activities and a variety of places to eat it’s quite literally a picture, postcard perfect place.
This beach is particularly popular with families thanks to the variety of things to do on and around the beach for both children and adults. With what feels like miles and miles of soft sand, the beach stretches the length from Shanklin through to Yaverland, and the further to Yaverland you go you may just be lucky enough to get a section of the beach to yourself.
Harking back to holidays past, Sandown Pier is open all year round with traditional arcade games from penny machines, chances to win stuffed toys and fruit machines for the grown ups. There’s also a café, pub and at the end of the pier you can cast your line with licences from the kiosk. Plus at the end of the pier are bumper cars, teacup rides and a traditional helter skelter.
Along the seafront you will find Dinosaur Isle (a prehistoric museum), Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, Sandown Lawn Bowls Club, Crazy Golf, Sandham Gardens Sky Nets and an excellent children’s play area.
During the summer, Sandown beach is machine cleaned and litter-picked on a daily basis, making it one of the cleanest beaches on the Island. Islanders ensure that everything that can be recycled or reused is, a large amount of seaweed is removed and offered to local farmers as compost.
